Blindness

VR Interactive space

Abstract

“Rambling of Blindness” is an interactive installation space that combines virtual reality. The work revolves around the theme of visual deprivation, where players must wear VR headsets and navigate through installations filled with blind alleys and obstacles, immersing themselves in the sensory experience of blindness.

Intention

The project aims to foster empathy among the audience by allowing them to physically and visually understand the challenges faced by the blind. Inspired by Portuguese author José Saramago’s novel “Blindness,” this work metaphorically conveys the concept of “spiritual blindness.”

Blindness

Research

Circumstance

In China, approximately 17 million visually impaired individuals face significant challenges. These include limited access to education, employment, and healthcare, as well as social stigma and discrimination. Efforts have been made to improve educational opportunities and vocational training, but misconceptions about blind people’s capabilities persist. While awareness has increased, infrastructure remains a critical issue. Tactile paving, audible traffic signals, and accessible facilities have been introduced, but rural areas still lack adequate support. Innovations like screen readers and smartphone apps are helping bridge gaps, but ensuring equal opportunities and social inclusion remains an ongoing endeavor.

Blindness

Inspiration

Everything began with a team member’s temporary experience of blindness: for over ten days, they were unable to perceive light. This not only caused practical inconveniences in their daily life but also inflicted mental torment. After hearing her recount this episode, we decided to initiate this project and delve into the profoundly different world of the visually impaired.

Inspiration II

The World Through the Eyes of the Blind

The view of blind people is akin to navigating a vast, uncharted landscape through senses other than sight. Their world unfolds through touch, sound, and intuition, painting vivid impressions of texture, distance, and emotion. In this realm of darkness, they find resilience, adaptability, and a unique perspective that transcends visual limitations. As Helen Keller eloquently expressed, “The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision.”

Blindness

Inspiration III

Some VR games transport players beyond our earthly confines, inviting them to explore the cosmos in ways that were once the stuff of science fiction. Whether touring the solar system or engaging in epic space battles, VR brings the universe to life! This inspires me to explore the combination of VR and real physical space.
